Refutera originates from the word of “refute”, which means to prove and “sejahtera”, which is Bahasa Indonesia for thriving. Refutera aims to prove an alternative perspective in which refugees are not always a burden. Refugees are a group with immense creativity and are ready to contribute to our community. The combination of language in Refutera reflects a hope of a social cohesion and mutual collaboration with trust and love.

Refutera, is a collaborative initiative between JRS, SMART, and beyond. We share similarities and are unique individuals. Being limited to rights of work, Refutera is designed as livelihood empowerment initiative. JRS and SMART invites you to participate in our process of creativity, skilfulness, and readiness to thrive!

Consistent with our tagline, “Buy Goods (that makes you happy), Empower Refugees”!

Seeing Deeper in JRS Indonesia

Indonesia, like its neighboring countries, is home to asylum seekers and refugees who are unable to return to their country of origin and await durable solutions.

Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention making refugees extremely vulnerable and marginalised once arriving in a new country. As of August 2020, Indonesia has become home to 13,612 asylum seekers and refugees from 48 countries, half of which originate from Afghanistan.

From the past 30 years, JRS has accompanied, served, and advocated for refugees and other displaced people living in urban areas and detention centres. JRS Indonesia currently provides services to vulnerable groups of refugees. Services include basic needs through cash based assistance, access to medical services, case management, psychosocial support through Bahasa Indonesia and English classes, and livelihood. JRS Indonesia is also coordinating support and collaboration with all good hearted individuals, organization, and government agencies, through advocacy program in order to increase protection space for refugees in Indonesia.

SMART Role in creating Refutera

With no right to work, refugees in Indonesia struggle with their lives and have to face a lot of financial problems while waiting for resettlement.

SMART, a refugee-led non-profit organization, was established by a group of refugees aiming to tackle this problem and empower refugees to be financially independent. Since the beginning of this year, SMART has been working with refugees with technical skills who can work online, but since SMART aims to empower all the refugees financially, it has been working on new ideas of empowering refugees who do not have any technical skills but are very skillful when it comes to handicraft.

SMART has collaborated with many organizations to provide an opportunity for the refugees to be financially independent despite having limited rights to learn and earn and believes that everyone deserves to work and live respectfully regardless of their life status.

STORIES BEHIND REFUTERA

Latifa's Story

Latifa from Qarbagh, Afghanistan escaped her home and flew to Indonesia to have freedom and peace. She’s currently a part of Refutera where she creates her handmade products. Latifa was passionate about sewing and handicrafts since she was a child, she learned it from her older sister. ” I really loved sewing since I was young. I could create different things such as Khamak, Graph, Qabtumar, etc and I’m still continuing to do so. Since I joined Refutera, I feel great and relieved from all the stress, it’s just a different feeling when I meet with other friends and we sit together creating beautiful products.

It’s important for each human to be happy. There’s an amazing feeling when I sell my products when I know I succeeded in creating something that is useful for others. Thanks to Refutera, I have an income and I can support my family. Hopefully, when we resettle from Indonesia, I’m planning to continue handicrafts and learn new skills. ” – says Latifa.

Zahra's Story

Zahra Yari fled her home in Afghanistan and is currently in Indonesia with her family.

Zahra learned sewing at a very young age back in her home country. It has been ten years and yet she continues to do handicrafts and embroideries. “One day my mother told me about handicrafts and asked her friend to teach me. The woman brought some products for sewing, I was very nervous because it was my first time. I managed to hold the needle and began sewing, but it did not turn out well. I went home and practiced, I had a lot of mistakes, but I did not stop. I worked harder and harder, within two days I was able to sew a straight line. The first piece that I sewed was White Embroidered trousers, my mother could not believe I did it. I feel relax and relieved from all the stress when I hold it.” – says Zahra.

Zahra Yari joined Refutera in 2020 by joining a handicraft competition and surprisingly got the first position. She can sew different things such as pouches, scarfs, dresses embroidery mirror etc. Sewing and crafting such products takes around two days based on the design and the items used. Besides her passion for handicrafts, she creates these products to make an income and support her family. Refugees in Indonesia spend more than 2 – 3 years hoping to resettle. For refugees, the most important change is when they are together, they release the stress. Sitting together and telling their stories. By doing so, refugees can feel the stress and tension are reduced.

Fatima's Story

Fatima, a young aspiring refugee woman living in Indonesia who is originally from Afghanistan. She moved to Iran only at six months old because of the war. She then began school and after graduation she got married. Meanwhile, Fatima decided to join the art university because of the passion she had but sadly she could not finish her studies.

In 2015, Fatima moved to Indonesia with her family. After a year of living in Indonesia, Fatima joined a refugee learning center as a volunteer art teacher and taught for almost two years. For some personal reasons, they moved to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

When they moved to Jakarta, Fatima joined the sisterhood as a student where programs and services promote the rights of women. At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 pandemic began, and everything went down, and it was a hard time for her. Refugees in Indonesia have limitation such as not being allowed to work which means they do not have an income, to study in public schools which affects children’s future. Fatima studied in the sisterhood community and joined crafting jewelry classes and thought by this way she can help her family. She also found out that she is interested in crafting jewelry and started creating products. She also owns her a social media page and sells handmade jewelry products online. Fatima believes that crafting needs a lot of hard work and patience, yet she sees a bright future to extending her work, helping other women to believe in themselves and help them stand on their own feet.
